The Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently open on a limited basis. Applications are being accepted from July 15, 2020, until further notice. Applications were last accepted from February 29, 2016, until March 4, 2016.
Please note: According to HANO, this waiting list is "for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and are referred by UNITY of Greater New Orleans jointly with the City of New Orleans, UNITY of Greater New Orleans, or by the New Orleans Family Justice Center. Please note that only pre-applications from families who are referred jointly by UNITY of Greater New Orleans and the City of New Orleans, UNITY of Greater New Orleans, or the New Orleans Family Justice Center will be accepted.
Who is Eligible?
- The individual or family must be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and referred by a partnering homeless service provider as outlined below:
- Referred jointly by the City of New Orleans and UNITY of Greater New Orleans and are:
- Individuals and families who the City of New Orleans identified and provided temporary housing in hotels as part of its emergency response to the COVID-19 health crisis;
- Unsheltered individuals and families who have been determined to be at risk during the pandemic;
- Individuals and families currently living in temporary shelters within Orleans Parish or within shelters of another parish, but who are working in or have been hired to work in Orleans Parish.
- Referred by UNITY of Greater New Orleans and are chronically homeless or homeless families.
- Referred by UNITY of Greater New Orleans and are Moving On from Permanent Supportive Housing or Rapid Rehousing programs.
- Referred by the New Orleans Family Justice Center and survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, or sexual assault and are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless
- Eligibility is based on household income, citizenship, and the ability of the family to meet screening requirements.
- HANO does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, familial status or disability."
- Referred jointly by the City of New Orleans and UNITY of Greater New Orleans and are:
To apply during the opening period, HNAO must receive a referral from UNITY of Greater New Orleans in conjunction with the City of New Orleans (if applicable), or from the New Orleans Family Justice Center. A pre-application with basic household information will be included with the referral.

This waiting list has the following preferences:
- Homeless
- Disabled
- Victims of Domestic Violence
- Non-Elderly Persons with Disabilities
HANO will provide a local preference for up to 99 non-elderly persons with disabilities who are:- Transitioning out of institutional and segregated settings;
- At serious risk of institutionalization;
- Homeless; or
- At risk of becoming homeless; or
- Graduating from Permanent Supportive Housing or Rapid Re-Housing programs and are Moving On.
Selected applicants will be placed on the waiting list by date and time the application is received, weighed by order of preferences.
